WNPC 2017

The biennial Wallace National Piano Competition brings together 16 of New Zealand's best young pianists, competing for prizes totalling $20,000. Each contestant plays two 30-minute programmes before adjudicator Piers Lane AO selects four finalists to perform in the Grand Final being held at the Auckland Town Hall on Sunday 16 July. Sponsored by the James Wallace Arts Trust, Templar Family Office, Creative New Zealand Communities, and Lewis Eady Charitable Trust.

London-based Australian pianist Piers Lane AO stands out as an engaging and highly versatile performer, at home equally in solo, chamber and concerto repertoire. In great demand as both a soloist and a collaborative artist, recent highlights include a performance of Busoni’s Piano Concerto at Carnegie Hall, premieres of Carl Vine’s Piano Concerto No. 2, written for him, with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and the London Philharmonic Orchestra, and sold-out solo recitals at Wigmore Hall.

Adjudicator's Masterclass

Free admission.

Internationally renowned concert pianist Piers Lane AO, Artistic Director for Sydney International Piano Competition of Australia, and Artistic Director for the Australian Festival of Chamber Music, will conduct a public masterclass for pianists who do not reach the Grand Final.

All welcome. Registrations are not required.

Four finalists will each perform a 45-minute programme, competing for prizes totalling $20,000. The awards ceremony will follow from approximately 6.45pm.
