Opera Scenes 2016 - Calvin Peter Photography

One of the year’s musical highlights, Opera Scenes prevails in its capacity to captivate and delight audiences. A vocal feast previewing the future of New Zealand opera with resounding performances from the School’s talented voice students, this year’s programme comprises portrayals of Maurice Ravel’s fantastical fairy tale, L’enfant et les sortilèges, telling of a naughty child taken to task by furniture and homework as they take shape and come to life, plus Samuel Barber’s micro-opera A Hand of Bridge which centres on the unfulfilled desires of two frustrated couples as they engage in their customary game of bridge.

These miniature operas are brilliant, diverting pieces, perfect for both operatic amateurs and aspirants alike.

Opera Scenes is the culmination performance of The Wallace Opera Training Programme, made possible by generous support from The Wallace Foundation. The cast consists of undergraduate voice performance students, coached and led by the School of Music’s accomplished academic and performance staff.
