The Wallace International Piano Festival returns on 12-15 July 2018 to exceed expectations! Be enthralled by internationally renowned pianists and celebrate our young, homegrown talents at the Wallace National Junior Piano Competition. 

In association with The Wallace Foundation, The University of Auckland, and the Lewis Eady Charitable Trust.

Biography:

One of Canada’s most exciting young pianists, Avan Yu achieved international recognition when he triumphed at the Sydney International Piano Competition in 2012, winning first prize plus nine additional awards. Since being invited to perform with the National Arts Centre Orchestra (Pinchas Zukerman) and the Vancouver Symphony (Bramwell Tovey), he has performed with renowned musicians such as Yo-Yo Ma, Rafael de Burgos, Christian Arming, Juanjo Mena, Johannes Moser, and the Armida Quartet. He has performed extensively throughout Europe, North America, Asia and Australia and at venues such as the Weill Recital Hall in Carnegie Hall, Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Philharmonie in Berlin, the Salle Cortot in Paris, and the Sydney Opera House.

Biography

Winner of the prestigious Albéniz Medal granted by the Fundación Pública Isaac Albéniz, Marta Zabaleta is a concert pianist, recording artist, and renowned pedagogue. She is currently professor of piano at Musikene (the Higher Academy of Music of the Basque Country) and the Director of the Marshall Academy in Barcelona.

Biography:

Seventeen-year-old Lixin Zhang is in his fifth year at Burnside High School studying the Specialist Music Programme for piano and violin. He began piano lessons at the age of four with Neville Baird, later studying with Michael Endres and Richard Mapp.

Lixin has been awarded the Irene Lassen Exhibition award from the Royal Schools of Music for his first diploma exam, and passed his LRSM diploma with a high distinction. In addition, he attained his fellowship diploma certificate from the Trinity College of London.

In 2017, Lixin was invited to perform solo concerts at festivals held in Mallorca, Spain. During the same year he attended a summer school program held in Switzerland. He was subsequently invited to return the following year to perform as a guest artist.

Lixin has won the 2017 Wallace National Piano Competition, 2016 Wallace National Junior Piano Competition, IRMT piano competition, and the Ruby Hay Pianoforte Scholarship. Earlier this year, Lixin recorded a CD with Rattle Records. Away from the piano, he enjoys playing table tennis, chess, and tennis.

Part of the Wallace International Piano Festival, the biennial Wallace National Junior Piano Competition gives New Zealand pre-tertiary pianists the opportunity to compete for prizes totalling over $4,000.

Competitors must perform a 20-minute recital programme of their choice, with at least three musical periods represented. Only six competitors are selected by the adjudicators to compete in the Competition Final at 7pm Saturday 14 July, followed by a prize-giving ceremony.
