Call for entries: Simon Devitt Prize for Photography

Simon Devitt Prize for Photography for Creative Arts & Industries students: Call for entries by Friday 5 May.

The Simon Devitt Prize for Photography was established in the School of Architecture and Planning at The University of Auckland in 2008 and is awarded annually in recognition of the best student photograph in the Faculty of Creative Arts and Industries. The exhibition is set to showcase unique photographic perspectives from some of New Zealand’s emerging creative minds with diverse backgrounds in fine art, music, dance, architecture, urban planning and urban design.

Finalists for 2017 will be exhibited at the George Fraser Gallery Wednesday 24 May – Saturday 3 June 2017 as part of the Auckland Festival of Photography Programme. The winning entry will receive the Simon Devitt Prize for Photography 2017; a trophy, NZ$1,000 award, and a Canon camera.

Entry information:

Win:
Enter to win NZ$1,000, a Canon camera, and be part of the Auckland Festival of Photography 2017.

Who:
Open to all currently enrolled in a full-time degree in the Faculty of Creative Arts and Industries at The University of Auckland.

How:

This year's theme: How are you?

Photo Specifications:

- Name the file with your name, ID number and the title of the photograph, e.g. "John_Smith-12345678-Yoghurt_Living".
- Digital specifications must be followed: at minimum, the image must be of resolution to print A3 (297mm x 420mm).


How to submit your photos:

Submit your photograph (or a cohesive series of up to 3 photographs) by Friday 5 May via the dropbox folder entitled "Simon Devitt Prize for Photography 2017." It's best to use the university computers.

Please also submit a photographic print/s to accompany your digital entry. Must be your best intended result printed onto photographic paper up to A4 (per photo). Please submit to the Student Centre (labelled ‘Attn: Gemma Lee – for Simon Devitt Prize for Photography’) by Friday 5 May. Please include with your print/s: your name, student ID number, along with the title of your work.

Windows:

a) Once logged into your university account, go to 'My Computer'
b) Type or copy the following in the address bar:  \\creative.auckland.ac.nz\dropboxes
c) Drag and drop your photos into the folder entitled "Simon Devitt Prize for Photography 2017" 


Mac OS:

a)  Once logged into your university account, in 'Finder', click on GO at the top menu
b) Choose CONNECT TO SERVER
c) In the Server Address - type or copy this address: smb://dropboxesshare.creative.auckland.ac.nz/dropboxes
d) Click on CONNECT
e) Drag and drop your photos into the folder entitled "Simon Devitt Prize for Photography 2017"

Terms and Conditions of Entry:

By entering this award competition, you agree to the following terms and conditions:

You will retain all rights to any photograph you submit - including ownership if applicable. If your photograph is selected to be exhibited at the George Fraser Gallery, May-June 2017, you grant Simon Devitt and The University of Auckland a royalty-free, non-exclusive right, in perpetuity, to only:

• Use the photograph on the internet in support of promotion of this annual award
• Use the photograph in all promotional material pertaining to the 2017 award (i.e. printed posters, brochures, internet-based event listings)
• Keep the files provided, and to archive the images on CD or in other electronic forms, so that your photos can be used in support of promotion of this annual award and be properly credited
• As conditions of this permission, Simon Devitt and The University of Auckland shall credit all photographs with the caption "© Person's Name, Title of photograph"

Judging:

• Thematic relevance will be given primary consideration
• The level of creativity used to illustrate the theme of the competition, including technique and aesthetic quality, will also be taken into consideration
• A copy of each entry will be reviewed by a judging panel. Winning entries will be selected by Simon Devitt, Photographer
• Successful exhibiting entrants will be notified by email by Tuesday 9 May
• The award recipient will receive their prize at the Opening Night on Tuesday 23 May
