School of Music

Welcome to the website of the University of Auckland’s School of Music, where we #preserveprogress!

Currently home to over 400 students, we are New Zealand’s largest music school at the tertiary level. Our five departments (Classical Performance, Jazz Performance, Popular Music, Composition and Musicology) provide not only a vibrant learning and research environment, but also contribute to Auckland’s exciting concerts and events scene.

Our staff include internationally renowned performers, composers and musicologists, and we are particularly proud of the wide range of opportunities that we can offer our students. This includes symphony orchestra, chamber ensembles, a contemporary music ensemble, big band, small jazz and popular music ensembles, access to one of the finest collections of early keyboard instruments in the Southern hemisphere, and a superb library collection.

Strong partnerships with institutions like the Pettman National Junior Academy, the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra, Chamber Music New Zealand and the Creative Jazz Club, as well as visiting local and international artists, enrich the day-to-day life of the school. Besides masterclasses from international guests like Michael Barenboim or Ramon Jaffé, one of the highlights of 2016 was a visit of Vladimir Ashkenazy.

We welcome contact from prospective students at any level, music lovers, educators and industry professionals.

Associate Professor Martin Rummel
Head of School.
