National Institute of Creative Arts and Industries

Australian students

Australian citizens and permanent residents can enrol at The University of Auckland as domestic students and pay domestic fees. You will also be eligible to apply for a New Zealand Government student loan to help cover tuition fees, course-related costs and living expenses.

Additionally, favourable exchange rates mean the cost of study in New Zealand compares positively with the cost of study in Australia. As an Australian student, you will also be able to work in New Zealand without a special visa or work permit.

You'll gain an internationally recognised degree, and while you're studying, you can immerse yourself in a different culture – but not so different that you need to learn a new language and way of doing things. You may even have the opportunity, through the University's international student exchange programme, to complete part of your degree overseas – while still paying domestic fees. You'll love living in New Zealand's largest and most multicultural city. As well as all the usual big city amenities like great cafés, restaurants, bars, clubs, theatres, concert venues, cinemas, markets and shops, you can also get out on the harbour or into the countryside in no time at all. Even a skiing trip is only five hours' drive away. And you'll still be relatively close to home, so you can visit friends and family during the holidays.

Jessica Rodda
“I moved to New Zealand from Australia to study with Jonathan Baker (Principal Tuba of the Auckland Philharmonic Orchestra), who is an amazing teacher with an incredible wealth of knowledge.

“The brass department is going ahead in leaps and bounds here. There are fantastic opportunities for playing, and we have access to so many brilliant teachers and players. The biggest highlight of my time here has been playing to a packed Auckland Town Hall at the Graduation Gala Concerto Competition in 2010, but day to day, there is nothing like the camaraderie of brass musicians.”

Jessica Rodda (Australia) is currently in her last year of a Bachelor of Music (BMus), majoring in Performance. She is planning to study for a Bachelor of Music (Honours) at the University in 2011, and aspires to become the second female tuba player in the world employed by a major symphony orchestra.
