Fees and money matters

Gaining a qualification from The University of Auckland is a valuable investment in your future. In the short term, however, it is likely that you will need to think carefully about how to pay tuition fees and living expenses while you are studying. The following advice and information will help with financial planning.

Undergraduate fees

These fees apply to domestic students only (New Zealand and Australian citizens and permanent residents). The calculation is approximate and based on a full-time course load of 120 points per annum. Use as a guide only.

In addition to tuition fees, students undertaking a fulltime load of 120 points in 2012 will pay approximately $689 for student services. Part-time students pay a proportion of the student services cost.

In all cases the fees per point will be charged at the rate set for that subject irrespective of the qualification the course is taken for. For detailed information regarding all fees, including how to pay, visit the main University web page Fees.

Financial support for doctoral students

Doctoral students can seek support from the University’s PReSS (Postgraduate Research Student Support) fund. This fund can be used to cover direct research costs, conferences and materials that can’t be covered by other research grants. Funding will be provided for every doctoral student for research costs, conferences and materials. The University of Auckland is currently the only university in New Zealand to provide such funding.

The NICAI Conference and Creative Event Fund (CCEF) can provide support to doctoral students to attend conferences and other research -related events.

NICAI’s schools can provide support through PBRF funds where criteria for allocation of these funds include provision for support of postgraduate students.

Part-time work

Many students work part-time to support themselves through university. As well as helping to cover costs, this is a great way to get valuable work experience and network with potential colleagues and employers. However, it’s important to strike a balance between the number of hours you work and the requirements of your university study, so that your academic performance doesn't suffer.

Before committing to a part-time job, find out whether you are expected to undertake professional placements or work experience as part of your programme of study. You should also let your employer know the dates of your exam times so you can build flexibility into your work schedule.

If you are applying for a student allowance, bear in mind that you can earn a maximum of $180 gross per week before your allowance is affected.

Some of our programmes can be completed over a number of years, giving you the flexibility to complete courses while doing a full-time or part-time job, or managing family responsibilities.
