Committing to university study can mean big lifestyle changes. To help you, the University offers a range of excellent student services and personalised support, including access to course planning advice, academic skills programmes and specialist career guidance.

The University's accommodation service can help you find somewhere to live that meets your needs or suits your lifestyle. You’ll find a range of University accommodation to choose from, whether you want fully catered Halls of Residence or a self-catered flat (apartment). The Accommodation Services office can also help in your search for private accommodation like a flat or homestay.

Auckland University Students’ Association (AUSA)

All students enrolled at The University of Auckland are eligible to join the Auckland University Students’ Association. Membership gives students access to social events, clubs and recreation facilities, as well as personal assistance with academic issues and representation on the University Council.

Career planning

University Careers Services is the largest of its kind in New Zealand. We provide workshops, seminars, individual appointments, a drop-in service and extensive online information resources. You can drop in to see our Careers Consultant at the NICAI Student Centre between 11am - 1pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays (no appointment required).

Childcare

For students with young children, there are six early childhood centres at the University, offering places to children aged from three months to five years. Parentspace provides facilities for caregivers and children, and there’s a child-friendly study space in the General Library.

Disability services

Disability co-ordinators provide advice, support and resources if you have disabilities. Resources include on-campus parking, notetakers, interpreters, sign language and alternative print formats.

English language support

If English is not your first language, or you need to improve your English skills, the University offers a variety of services to help you gain confidence in your speaking, reading and writing.

Diagnostic English Language Needs Assessment (DELNA) is a free service that helps to identify your level of English and guide you to the most appropriate English language support.

Health and counselling

General practice medical clinics are available at the City, Grafton, Tāmaki and Epsom Campuses. Counselling services are offered at City and Grafton. Grafton and Tāmaki have optometry clinics. The City Campus also has a dental clinic and psychiatry, dermatology and physiotherapy services.

Information Commons
  • This is the place to go to develop your IT, information literacy, English language and learning skills.
  • You’ll have access to multi-purpose computers, printers, scanners, photocopiers and wireless networking technology.
  • You can retrieve information from the library databases, e-journals and e-books; access course work through CECIL (the University’s e-learning system); send email and surf the web; use MS Office and other specialist programmes - all from the same computer.

Postgraduate Students’ Association (PGSA)

The Postgraduate Student’s Association (PGSA) was set up by postgraduate students to enhance the postgraduate study experience. As well as support, guidance and advocacy services, the PGSA promotes social and professional networking opportunities for postgraduate students.

Student Advocacy Service

We offer prompt, comprehensive and completely confidential support to students who have concerns or problems with University life or services. We can also provide general legal advice on issues within the wider community, such as tenancy and employment.

Strata

Located on Level 4 of the Kate Edger Building, Strata is a dedicated space for postgraduate students and University staff. It has a spacious café with a balcony, a quiet study area, meeting and conference room. The Postgraduate Students Association hosts a number of social events at Strata during the year.

The Centre for Academic Development – Tā Te Ākonga (Student Learning)
  • The Centre for Academic Development –Tā te Ākonga (Student Learning) runs regular workshops to help you develop effective learning strategies, from time management and study organisation to exam preparation techniques.
  • Te Puni Wananga and the Fale Pasifika offer individual help and training for Māori and Pacific students.

The Graduate Centre

The Graduate Centre is an information and administrative centre run by the School of Graduate Studies specifically for postgraduate students.
The centre includes spaces for study and relaxation, as well as computing, printing and copier facilities. Student advisers are available to assist with masters and doctoral enquiries, as well as career advice for research students.
