If English is not your first language, or you need to improve your English skills, the University offers a variety of services to help you gain confidence in your speaking, reading and writing.
Diagnostic English Language Needs Assessment (DELNA) is a free service that helps to identify your level of English and guide you to the most appropriate English language support.

Information Commons
- This is the place to go to develop your IT, information literacy, English language and learning skills.
- You’ll have access to multi-purpose computers, printers, scanners, photocopiers and wireless networking technology.
- You can retrieve information from the library databases, e-journals and e-books; access course work through CECIL (the University’s e-learning system); send email and surf the web; use MS Office and other specialist programmes - all from the same computer.

Postgraduate Students’ Association (PGSA)
The Postgraduate Student’s Association (PGSA) was set up by postgraduate students to enhance the postgraduate study experience. As well as support, guidance and advocacy services, the PGSA promotes social and professional networking opportunities for postgraduate students.

Student Advocacy Service
We offer prompt, comprehensive and completely confidential support to students who have concerns or problems with University life or services. We can also provide general legal advice on issues within the wider community, such as tenancy and employment.

Strata
Located on Level 4 of the Kate Edger Building, Strata is a dedicated space for postgraduate students and University staff. It has a spacious café with a balcony, a quiet study area, meeting and conference room. The Postgraduate Students Association hosts a number of social events at Strata during the year.

The Centre for Academic Development – Tā Te Ākonga (Student Learning)
- The Centre for Academic Development –Tā te Ākonga (Student Learning) runs regular workshops to help you develop effective learning strategies, from time management and study organisation to exam preparation techniques.
- Te Puni Wananga and the Fale Pasifika offer individual help and training for Māori and Pacific students.

The Graduate Centre
The Graduate Centre is an information and administrative centre run by the School of Graduate Studies specifically for postgraduate students.
The centre includes spaces for study and relaxation, as well as computing, printing and copier facilities. Student advisers are available to assist with masters and doctoral enquiries, as well as career advice for research students.
