Dr. Ricardo Dal Farra has been conducting activities in the merging fields of arts, sciences and new technologies as a composer and multimedia artist, researcher, educator, performer and curator focusing mainly on electroacoustic music and new media arts for more than 25 years. Michael Norris is a Wellington‐based composer and is currently Programme Leader (Composition) at the New Zealand School of Music. In 2003, Michael won the Douglas Lilburn Prize, a nationwide competition for orchestral composers. His presentation at the The New Zealand Electroacoustic Music Symposium 2010 charted the author's development of SoundMagic Spectral from 2001–2010, a suite of experimental FFT‐based plugins that run in real time within host software such as Logic and Max/MSP. John Elmsly is a graduate in mathematics and music from Victoria University of Wellington, he studied piano with Barry Margan, composition with David Farquhar, and began electronic music with Douglas Lilburn. In 1981 he received the Mozart Fellowship from the University of Otago in Dunedin, and in 1984 was appointed lecturer in Composition at the The University of Auckland’s School of Music where he is currently Associate Professor and Head of Composition. Robert Constable is currently Professor and Head of the School of Music at The University of Auckland. In this talk he outlines the various steps in the creative process of composition, from commission to completed work, and will discuss the principles of proportion and musical design that he uses, illustrating his talk with one of his recent works, Jewel for violin and piano.
