Fees and money matters
Choosing to study for a qualification from The University of Auckland is a valuable investment in your future. In the short term, however, it is likely that you will need to think carefully about how to pay tuition fees and living expenses while you are studying.
The student allowance is a weekly payment to help with your living costs while in full-time study on an approved programme. It is available to New Zealand citizens and permanent residents who have held New Zealand residency for at least two years.
Full information about student allowances is available on the StudyLink website.
To be eligible for a student loan you must be a New Zealand citizen or have been granted permanent resident status. You must be studying full-time for a minimum of 12 weeks, or part-time for a full year, at an approved tertiary institution.
You may apply for tuition fees, course-related costs (for example, books, stationery and travel) and living costs (living costs are not available to part-time students).
Applications for loans should be made at least one month before study begins.
Full information about student loans is available on the StudyLink website.
Many students work part-time to support themselves through university. As well as helping to cover costs, this is a great way to get valuable work experience and network with potential colleagues and employers. However, it’s important to strike a balance between the number of hours you work and the requirements of your university study, so that your academic performance doesn't suffer.
Before committing to a part-time job, find out whether you are expected to undertake professional placements or work experience as part of your programme of study. You should also let your employer know the dates of your exam times so you can build flexibility into your work schedule.
Some University programmes can be completed over a number of years, giving you the flexibility to complete courses while doing a full-time or part-time job, or managing family responsibilities.

These fees are for the first year of study in the following undergraduate programmes. They are for domestic students only (New Zealand and Australian citizens and permanent residents). The calculation is approximate and based on a full-time course load of 120 points per annum. Use as a guide only. After you have applied, accepted an offer of a place and enrolled, you can generate a statement/invoice via Student Services Online.
In addition to tuition fees, students undertaking a fulltime load of 120 points in 2012 will pay approximately $689 for student services. Part-time students pay a proportion of the student services cost.
In all cases the fees per point will be charged at the rate set for that subject irrespective of the qualification the course is taken for. For detailed information regarding all fees, including how to pay, visit the main University web page Fees.

Similarly, fees payable for students on Rotary International, Commonwealth, Fulbright and DAAD scholarships are also calculated at the domestic rather than the international rate. | |
