National Institute of Creative Arts and Industries
Meet our international students
Students come to study at NICAI from all over Europe, Asia, America, Australia and the Pacific. Here, a few of them share their experiences and aspirations for the future.
Mariko Harada
"I decided on New Zealand as a place to study English and learn about other cultures because I was charmed by the atmosphere of this country; the beautiful natural surroundings and friendly people. Life here is very comfortable and relaxing, although on the other hand it can be very challenging communicating in a second language! I always liked creating things since childhood, and I was told that Elam is the best place to study fine arts in New Zealand. Elam has taught me to be always open-minded, and encouraged me to explore my ideas freely. The multicultural environment here also gives me great inspiration. I have enjoyed learning so many new and different media/areas in well-equipped facilities, with knowledgeable teachers to guide me. I am planning to go back to Japan when I graduate, and hopefully find a creative job where I can use the skills I learnt through this valuable experience at Elam School of Fine Arts.”
Mariko Harada (Japan) is currently studying for a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) (BFA(Hons))
Namita Kambli
“After completing my undergraduate education in India I decided that I wanted to study abroad to see a different part of the world. I opted for The University of Auckland not only because it is New Zealand’s top university but also because Auckland is internationally renowned as one of the world’s most liveable cities!
“A PhD is both challenging and stimulating but the support from my supervisors, colleagues and the Student Learning Centre has been remarkable. The past two and a half years have taught me perseverance, discipline and time management while sharpening my research skills.”
Namita Kambli (India) is a PhD candidate in Architecture and the recipient of a University of Auckland International Doctoral Scholarship.
Nur Diyana Zulkifli
"Being a Malaysian Government-sponsored student, I’m inspired to gain as much knowledge as I can while I’m here. I like the School of Architecture because it provides freedom for students to make independent decisions in the design process under expert supervision. It is the School’s exceptional approach that encourages us to embark on self-directed research.
The availability of staff expertise allows me access to a whole range of architectural knowledge in various fields, which I can use in my practice once I return to Malaysia. It has been a wonderful four years living and studying in New Zealand. I will make the most of my final year and look forward to graduating with an internationally recognised masters degree in architecture."
Diyana (Malaysia) is currently studying for a Master of Architecture (Professional).
Mohsen Mohammadzadeh
"My PhD in Planning at the National Institute of Creative Arts and Industries has been a great opportunity for me. Since arriving from Iran I have met students from all over New Zealand and overseas, and the friendly and supportive atmosphere has been immensely gratifying. Working with internationally recognized academic staff has improved my knowledge and the research resources and facilities at NICAI are outstanding.
Receiving the International Doctoral Scholarship has enabled me to focus primarily on my research whereby I am improving my knowledge in planning in order to achieve a high academic standard at The University of Auckland."
Mohsen Mohammadzadeh (Iran) is currently studying for a PhD in Planning.
Teuila Hughes
“Growing up in Fiji introduced me to many different Pacific cultures, and the best way for me to get to know each was through dance.
“I chose Dance Studies at The University of Auckland because the Programme offers opportunities to explore individual movement through body and mind, as well as the role of dance in society, which I think is important.”
Teuila Hughes (Fiji) is currently studying for a Master of Creative and Performing Arts (MCPA) – Dance Studies.
Holger de Groot
“I started studying architecture in Germany, but found there weren’t many opportunities to complete an internationally recognised degree in architecture. So I decided to study for my Master of Architecture at The University of Auckland.
“During my studies I undertook research in sustainable design, and the health issues caused by deficiencies in architectural standards. I also gained practical experience by working in several New Zealand architectural firms.”
Holger de Groot (Germany) has recently completed a Master of Architecture (MArch).
Forrest Chen
"It was the wonderful study experience I had in the Taylors Foundation programme that made me decide to study Architecture at the University, and I'm really glad I did. In 2010, I had the opportunity to travel to Spain and Portugal for a month along with other Architecture students from all levels, to study the ground-breaking architectural masterpieces of Madrid and Barcelona and attend lectures at the Barcelona School of Architecture (ETSAB). It was a great trip.
"I arrived in New Zealand unsure about what I wanted to study and where I would go in life. I have since found my dream and am pursuing this with everything I have. My dream is to become an architect and to build structures that are harmonious and inspirational."
Forrest Chen (China) is currently studying for a Bachelor of Architectural Studies (BAS).
Hiromi Sakamoto
"I have been fortunate enough to benefit from the special domestic rate fees offered to International PhD students. I don't have a scholarship, but tuition fees at The University of Auckland are very reasonable, making my study more affordable. I have also been able to assist with teaching in the Dance Studies Programme, which has helped my finances."
Hiromi Sakamoto (Japan) is currently studying for a PhD in Dance Studies.
