National Institute of Creative Arts and Industries
Tuākana programme
The Tuākana mentoring programme is designed for Māori and Pacific students who need support in their first year of study at The University of Auckland, while The Research Assistants' Workshop helps students expand their learning skills to prepare for postgraduate study.
Tuākana Mentoring Programme
Tuākana (mentors) are senior Māori and Pacific students who have been trained in how to be effective mentors to their teina (mentees). Tuākana meet regularly with teina one-on-one, to discuss any problems or issues they may be having, help them acquire skills that will be helpful at university and beyond, and encourage them to undertake academic work that is supportive of their identity.
Benefits of being involved in the Tuākana programme include:
- improving your academic achievement
- increasing your access to resources and University services
- providing networks – getting to know more students, at your own level and above
- keeping you informed about Māori and Pacific funding, research, performing and work opportunities.
The Tuākana room is a space for NICAI Māori and Pacific students to meet, study, chat or eat. It is located in Room 220 of the Architecture and Planning Building, adjacent to the Student Centre. To book the room, contact:

Research Assistants’ Workshop (RAW)
The NICAI Tuākana Research Assistants’ Workshop (RAW) provides an opportunity for NICAI’s Māori and Pacific students to expand their learning skills, and prepares them to undertake postgraduate studies. The students learn research techniques for interviewing, data analysis, literature searches, research design, proposal and report writing. Kaupapa Māori and Pacific methodology is a central part of the programme, and Māori and Pacific researchers and graduates assist in and facilitate sessions.
RAW has proven to be very successful and received a University of Auckland Excellence in Equity Award for excellence in equal educational opportunities.
Students at a recent workshop commented:
“It’s really nice to be in a Māori, Pasifika environment and learn from others with the same cultural perspective.”
“It’s the only chance I’ve had to share research and ideas in such a natural way.”
“I’ve enjoyed talking about research away from the stress of completion and application; looking at it more in the abstract: what it intrinsically is and how it is integral to the work we do.”
