2010/2011 NICAI Summer Scholarships
At a well-attended Postgraduate Info Evening on 30 September 2010, 16 students from every discipline across NICAI were awarded Summer Scholarships in order to get started on their postgraduate research during the summer months. Given the high number and quality of the applications, the NICAI Postgraduate Committee obtained support for 5 additional scholarships from NICAI and the University, bringing our total allocation to 16. The scholarship winners worked with their supervisors on a diverse range of artistic, musical, dance-related, architectural and planning projects:
| Sean Carley | Fine Arts | To explore how digital projector technologies are applied in art galleries. |
| Mathew Coldicutt | Fine Arts | To work on the art installation Headland on Waiheke Island. |
| Mark Davey | Planning | To investigate urban landscape management in Parnell. |
| Rebecca Green | Architecture | To research the history of domestic architecture in Auckland. |
| Amelia Hitchcock | Fine Arts | To collect sounds and images from the Tasman Glacier for a multi-media exhibition. |
| Emil McAvoy | Fine Arts | To investigate the National Publicity Studios at the New Zealand Pavilion of the Osaka World Expo in 1970. |
| Louise Menzies | Fine Arts | To develop selected artworks from the School of Radiant Living for exhibition. |
| Jordan Tomas Saunders | Architecture | To design an architectural representation system for place-bound data. |
| Naomi Faik Simet | Dance Studies | To investigate how gunge takwaku is taught in the highlands of Papua New Guinea. |
| Reilly Smethurst | Music | To explore Lacanian theory in relation to acousmatic art music. |
| Celine Sumic | Dance Studies | To research dance and somatic practices as a bridge to socio-spatial renewal. |
| Paul Tarling | Music | To investigate Johann Baptist Wanhal’s musical depictions of the battles of the Nile and Trafalgar. |
| Abigail Thompson | Architecture | To investigate the psychological impact of the destruction of architecture in Christchurch. |
| Katherine Walker | Dance Studies | To do a comparative study of hip-hop dance pedagogy in southern China and New Zealand. |
| Cameron Wallace | Planning | To critically review the development and implementation of Auckland’s new spatial plan. |
| Zhi Jian Wong | Architecture | To design a model for energy conservation at the Remuera Intermediate School. |
Students looking to do a postgraduate programme at NICAI in 2012 will have the opportunity to apply for a Summer Scholarship in Semester Two 2011.
