The 2018 NZ Wood-Resene Timber Design Awards honoured talented School of Architecture and Planning students and staff once more at a gala event in Auckland in September. Recognised for their creative and innovative use of timber, Master of Architecture (Professional) students Andy Wang, Henry Fraser, and Jingkun Ye, plus Professor Andrew Barrie were included in the evening’s accolades.
Andrew Barrie, based at the School of Architecture and Planning at the University of Auckland, is an architectural critic and designer who works as Andrew Barrie Lab. In collaboration with MArch(Prof) student Jin Kun Ye, the Lab picked up Highly Commended in the Exterior Innovation and Infrastructure category with project Timber Cloud.
In addition, student Lingyi Wang with Andrew Barrie Lab also picked up a finalist slot for Exterior Innovation and Infrastructure and NZ Specialty Timber Award with The Atmosphere of Joinery.
Rounding off another successful evening for the School, the Innovation of Student Design Award was presented to MArch(Prof) student Henry Fraser. Henry was awarded $1000 for his impressive project, Newton Central Primary School.
The judges, which included Pamela Bell of Prefab NZ; structural engineer at BRANZ, David Carradine; NZIA president Tim Melville; and sustainable architect at Scion, Andrea Stocchero noted, “The remarkable achievements of all contestants show how wood is the perfect material to deliver more sustainable and resilient buildings. It’s fantastic to see the growing use of local products such as CLT, glulam and LVL in a broader range of applications with some stunning results.”
